Here it is: after seven (well, six and a half) grueling revisions, I have a combat system. I went and put an explanation and notes from my analysis into a convenient public PDF for anyone interested to download, test, use, and critique:

That was pretty much the last big hurdle. The magic system needs a few nuts and bolts added to it (and a decent name), all of the pieces I've written need to be nailed together in a single draft, and there are a few bones that still need to be covered in flesh, but that's mostly just fluff and sitting down to write it - the puzzling and calculating is over. There's still a chance I can get this out before I turn 30!
